Mary Virginia Martin VanWart, age 87, passed away on January 7, 2019 in Hattiesburg, MS. She was preceded in death by her husband, Judge Donald MacGregor VanWart, Jr.; her parents, Ray Henry and Jewel Martin, and a sister, Rachel Martin Vigneault. Mrs. VanWart is survived by three daughters, Virginia VanWart, Louise Stirling VanWart, and Mary VanWart West, and two grandchildren. She was born on December 13, 1931 in Morgan City, Mississippi. Mrs. VanWart received a Home Economics Degree from Mississippi State College for Women. Following graduation, she became a Home Economist with New Orleans Public Service (NOPSI), where she helped to write the Rider's Digest, a publication that was read by many New Orleanians on NOPSI buses. She later became a real estate agent prior to relocating to Hattiesburg with her husband in the mid-70s. Mrs. VanWart was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution and she was the recipient of the Inez Gautier Parker Bowl of the Spirit of '76 Chapter of the D.A.R. for her service. In Hattiesburg, she was a member of the Audubon Society,and the Four Seasons Garden Club. The family is very grateful to Sondra Goar, friend and caregiver, and to her other caregivers, and to the staff of Provision Living at Hattiesburg. A memorial service will be at University Baptist Church, 3200 Arlington Loop, Hattiesburg, MS at 11:30 a.m. on Saturday, January 19, 2019 with visitation beginning at 10:30 a.m. Internment will be in Metairie Cemetery at a later date. In lieu of flowers, a memorial may be made to the Crosby Arboretum MSW-ES, and mail to PO Box 1693, Picayune, MS 39466, or MSW Foundation.com or to the charity of choice. Hulett-Winstead Funeral Home in Hattiesburg, MS is in charge of arrangements.
