Elijah Barber enrolled December 11, 1861 at Camp Moore in Captain Hyder A Kennedy's Company of the Claiborne Volunteers. He was placed on sick furlough on April 20, 1862, and was again present for duty on the September-October 1862 roll. He re-enlisted on May 8, 1862, while in Corinth, Mississippi. On July 10, 1863, he appeared on roll as sick in the hospital at Breckinridge's Division Hospital No. 2, Lauderdale Springs, Mississippi. On January 20, 1864, his company re-enlisted for the duration of the war. He was placed on wounded furlough from August 17, 1864 until October 16, 1864. The roll indicated he was retired on February 5, 1865, yet on February 15, 1865, his name appeared on the Register of Way Hospital, Meridian, Mississippi, for wounds.
