James Philip Schweitzer, Ph.D. died of cancer Monday, June 21, 1993, at his residence. He was 66, a native of Bogalusa, reared in Shreveport, former resident of Baton Rouge for many years, and a recent resident of Niceville, Florida. He was an L.S.U. professor emeritus, and a U.S. Navy veteran.

Private services will be held in Bogalusa, with a Catholic mass offered at a later date in Niceville, Fla. Survived by wife, Nancy Naquin Schweitzer; sons, Merlin and Ricky Schweitzer; sisters, Dorothy Gates, Bogalusa, Mary Louise Cotton, Dallas, Helen Daniel, Florence, Ala.; Anna Joyce Schweitzer and Andrew Schweitzer, Houston, Texas. Preceded in death by parents, Bart Schweitzer and Dixie Talley Schweitzer.

He was an aluminus of Centenary College, L.S.U. and Auburn University. His writings and teachings in the field of oceanography and marine science contributed to his pioneering efforts in marine education in Fla. and La. As first president of the National Marine Education Association, his work continues to be a part of teacher education at the secondary level. He also taught at several elementary schools after his retirement. Dear to his heart was his 12 years as a soccer coach and his association with the players and parents of the STORM teams.

The family would like to express their deep appreciation to the caring people from Hospice of Northwest Florida Inc. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions be made to Baton Rouge Soccer Association, 1651 Lobdell Ave., St. 203, Baton Rouge, 70806. McLaughlin Twin City Funeral Home, Niceville, Fla., in charge of arrangements.
