George Atkins enlisted March 31, 1863 at Homer, Louisiana. On December 17, 1863, he was placed on sick furlough for 40 days; on April 30, 1864, he was dropped from the roll for a long continued absence without leave; however, he was placed back on the roll when he rejoined the company on May 1, 1864. On February 20, 1865, his name appeared on the roll as sick in the hospital in Mobile, Alabama. On April 4, 1865, he was listed as sick in the hospital in Lauderdale, Mississippi. His name appeared on the Roll of Prisoners of War of General Hospital "Stout" of the Confederate States of America when surrendered at Citronelle, Alabama. He was paroled on May 16, 1865, in Meridian, Mississippi.
