Joseph Whittington enlisted July 8, 1861 at Camp Moore, Louisiana. He remustered on February 10, 1862 under the conscript act. On August 29, 1862, he was wounded in the Battle of the 2nd Manassas. During his service, he was involved in the following engagements: Winchester, May 25, 1862; Cedar Mountain, August 9, 1862; Manassas, August 28-29, 1862; Fredericksburg, December 13, 1862 and again on May 4, 1863; Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, July 1-3, 1863; Mine Run, 1863; Mortonsford, 1863; The Wilderness, May 5, 1864; Spottsylvania, May 12, 1864; Richmond, Virginia, June 1-3, 1864; Monocacy, July 9, 1864; Washington, DC, 1864; Shepherdstown, August 25, 1864; 3rd Winchester, July 24, 1864; Fisher's Hill, September 22, 1864; Bell Grove, October 19, 1864; Snicker's Gap, 1864; Kernstown, 1864; Darkesville, 1864, and Hatcher's Run, February 6, 1865.
