Lemuel Andrew Craighead enlisted on August 13, 1861, at Camp Moore, Louisiana. On June 12, 1862, he was listed as sick in the hospital in Grenada, Mississippi, until September 1, 1863, when he was discharged from the service. He was issued a Certificate of Disability upon discharge. The attending physician certified Lemuel Craighead had tuberculosis and hypertrophy of the heart. On March 5, 1865, he was admitted to the CSA General Hospital in Shreveport, Louisiana, and transferred on April 1, 1865, to Keatchi. His record upon admission to the CSA General Hospital reflected his unit as Provost Guard.
