William R. May enlisted on September 29, 1861, at Camp Moore, Louisiana, at the age of 21. On March 20, 1862, he was admitted to 1 Mississippi CSA Hospital, Jackson, Mississippi for debility. On May 23, 1862, while in Edward, Mississippi, he re-enlisted for the duration of the war. On July 4, 1863, he was captured at Vicksburg, Mississippi. On July 10, 1863, he swore an oath of allegiance to the United States and was paroled. He returned to his unit to continue the fight. On May 26, 1865, his unit surrendered in New Orleans, Louisiana. He was paroled June 12, 1865, in Monroe, Louisiana.
