William enlisted at Camp Walker, New Orleans, Louisiana, on May 17, 1861. He was captured at Vicksburg, Mississippi, on July 4, 1863. He took the oath of allegiance to the United States on July 7, 1863, and was paroled on July 8, 1863. On March 29, 1864, he was exchanged in Shreveport, Louisiana.
