John Wood Anthony, died Wednesday, October 20, 2010 at the age of 90 at home after a long battle with heart disease. He was born in 1920 in New Orleans, LA. He attended Fortier High School and Tulane University where he was Phi Beta Kappa. He ultimately graduated from Tulane Law School in 1942 where he was Order of the Coif and Civil Law Editor of the Tulane Law Review.

He then served as staff sergeant in Army Intelligence during WWII. He married Marie Louise Ware of Opelousas, LA., the love of his life, in 1945. They moved to Bogalusa, LA in 1946 to join the Talley Law Firm where he practiced law until 1989. He was a tenacious lawyer and thoroughly enjoyed his work.

In addition to his law practice, he served the community in a variety of ways. He served on the Washington Parish Library Board for 26 years. He was the chairman for 16 of those years. During his tenure as chairman, both the existing Bogalusa and Franklinton library buildings were built. He also served as Kiwanis Club president, Commander of American Legion Post 24, Chef de Guerre of the 40 & 8, Chairman of the Welfare Advisory Board, Chairman of the Washington Parish Boy Scouts of America, President of the Washington Parish Bar Association, Senior Warden of St. Matthews Episcopal Church, and Chairman of the 4th of July parade.

He was an avid reader, loved music and played the piano. He raised Shetland ponies and Hereford cattle. He studied his books throughout his days. He loved life and was perpetial student of it. He will be sadly missed.

He was preceded in death by his parents, John William Anthony and Elta Bell Wood Anthony. He is survived by his wife, Marie Ware Anthony; his brother, Warner Hale Anthony, Sr.; his three daughters and sons-in-law, Mary Anthony, Virginia "Ginny" (Al) Rodriguez, and Susan (Phil) Crawford; two grandchildren, Andrew and Mary Margaret Crawford; and numerous other relatives.

Pallbearers are, Warner Anthony,Jr., Phillip Crawford, Ted Dittmer, Brad Lewis, Craig Robichaux and Alfred Rodriguez.

Visitation will be held at St. Matthews Episcopal Church, 208 Georgia Avenue, Bogalusa, LA 70427 on Friday, October 22, 2010 from 5:00 P.M. - 7:00 P.M.

Visitation will continue at St. Matthews Episcopal Church, 208 Georgia Avenue, Bogalusa, LA 70427 on Saturday, October 23, 2010 from 1:00 P.M. until the Funeral Services at 2:00 P.M. The Rev. Milton Gibson will officiate and Interment to follow at Ponemah Cemetery.
