He was born in Putnam County, Georgia, and after having moved to Louisiana, he enlisted on March 12, 1862 at Brush Valley, Louisiana. On June 9, 1862, he was admitted to the CSA General Hospital, Charlottesville, Virginia. On June 16, 1862, he was sent to General Hospital Number 2, Lynchburg, Virginia. On November 7, 1862, he was discharged from the army for a malformation of the chest. A Certificate Of Disability For Discharge was issued citing, in part, "...which (illegible) with the actions of the heart and lungs (deformity)."
