He enlisted December 11, 1861, at Camp Moore. He was captured on April 7, 1862, at Shiloh, Tennessee. On April 18, 1862, he was admitted to Number 3 USA General Hospital, Evansville, Indiana, for a gunshot wound in the head. He was transferred to Indianapolis, Indiana on November 22, 1862. His parole date is unknown. He was captured at Pittsburg Landing, Mississippi and sent to Vicksburg on January 14, 1863. His name appeared on the roll for Gration Street Military Prison, St Louis, Missouri on March 12, 1863. The record showed him to be discharged as a Prisoner of War on April 2, 1863. On April 9, 1863, he was admitted to Episcopal Church Hospital, Williamsburg, Virginia, with paralysis. He was furloughed April 18, 1863.
