One record shows he enlisted on August 6, 1861 at Camp Pickens while another shows his enlistment as June 1861 at Camp Moore. He re-enlisted on April 24, 1862, and on August 1, 1863, was appointed to Second Corporal. The record on August 31, 1864 reported him as wounded since June 2, 1864. The record also showed he was wounded near Richmond, Virginia, and in the trenches near Petersburg, Virginia on March 24, 1865. He participated in engagements in Fredericksburg (May 4, 1863), Winchester (June 14, 1863), Gettysburg (July 1-2, 1863), Rappahannock Bridge (November 7, 1863), wounded at Wilderness (May 5, 1864), absent with wounds at Spottsylvania (May 12, 1864), and present at Mechanicsville Pike (June 2, 1864).
