While sailing from Guam to Leyte Gulf to prepare for the invasion of Japan, the USS Indianapolis was sunk by two Japanese torpedoes. The ship sank within 12 minutes leaving approximately 900 men, out of the crew of 1,196, in the water. When rescued approximately five days later only 316 men were still alive.
