T/Sgt Aswell was the radio operator on B-24D #40-2354, assigned to the 8th Air Force, 44th Bombardment Group, 66th Bombardment Squadron. They were flying from Shipdham England on a bombing mission against St. Nazaire France. Very soon after leaving the English coast, Aswell's plane had some kind of trouble maintaining position in the formation and collided with another bomber, #41-23818. Both planes burst into flames, exploded and plunged into the English Channel. Four parachutes were seen by other air crews, but rescue boats were unable to locate any of the men from either plane.

Because his body was not recovered, his name is inscribed on the Tablets of the Missing at the Cambridge American Cemetery in England.
