Franklinton - Dr William Harrell Armstrong, age 83, a resident of Franklinton, Louisiana died at 10:10 pm Tuesday in Riverside Medical Center.

The son of the late Roy and Lula Armstrong, as a young man he served in the US Navy during WW II in both the Atlantic and Pacific. His last duty was aboard aircraft carrier USS Hornet.

He was a teacher and served in public education for 43 years in Louisiana, Georgia and Alabama. He retired from the University of Alabama in Birmingham in 1983 as head of the department of vocational and career technical education.

He was a respected and loved Sunday School teacher, deacon and member of First Baptist Church in Franklinton and a 32nd Degree Mason in the Scottish Rite and a member of the Zona Lodge in Enon for 60 years.

He was a faithful and loving husband of over 60 years to his high school sweetheart, Maxine Jones Armstrong of Enon, Louisiana who died August 28, 2004.

He loved to fish and design and build furniture for his family. In later life, he and his wife enjoyed traveling. He will be greatly missed by his children, spouses, grandchildren and sister, as he was a devoted family man. His God and family always came first. Generosity, Christian service, humility and devotion to family are a hallmark of this beloved man.

He is survived by daughters and sons -in-law: Pam and James H Penny of Franklinton and Phyllis and George Panos of Birmingham; son and daughter -in-law, William H Jr and Coby Armstrong of Atlanta, Georgia; grandchildren and spouses Jeremy Todd and Michelle Richardson and Jill Leanne and Mike Hickman; great-grandchild, Gage Evans Richardson; and sister, Agnes Carter of Plainview.

Franklinton - Maxine Jones Armstrong, 83, a resident of Franklinton, Louisiana died at 2:10 am Saturday in Riverside Medical Center. Family members said she was a devoted wife, mother and homemaker and was active in all facets of church work, including teaching Sunday school, home Bible study groups, singing in church choirs and vacation Bible school and leading nursing home ministries. She was a member of First Baptist Church in Franklinton.

She shared her love of music and singing with all of her family and her hobbies, when she had time, were sewing, reading, travel, and Bible study.

Survivors include her husband of 60 years, Dr William H Armstrong of Franklinton; daughters and sons-in-law, Pam and James H Penny of Franklinton and Phyllis and George Panos of Birmingham; son and daughter-in-law, William H Jr and Coby Armstrong of Atlanta, Georgia; grandchildren and spouses, Jeremy Todd and Michelle Richardson of Franklinton, and Jill Leanne and Mike Hickman of Jackson, Mississipi; great-grandchild, Gage Even Richardson; sisters, Vivian Jones Richardson of Enon, Louisiana and Voleska Jones Case of Pearl River, Louisiana.

A native of the Enon community, she was the daughter of the late Lorah Jones and Amazon Mizell Jones; and was also preceded in death by brothers, Varnel and W Kyle Jones.
