Juanita Lytle Smith
A resident of Franklinton, Juanita Lytle Smith passed away on Friday, May 25, 2007, at 12:15 p.m. She was born Anna Juanita Lytle on Dec. 7, 1916, in Terre Haute, Ind., the second child of Grover Cleveland Lytle and Mattie Belle Danner Lytle. While she was still 3 years of age, her father's job with the railroad moved their family to Stamps, Ark., then to Minden. After her graduation from Minden High School in 1934, she met Sam Harrell Smith of Baywood while he was a young LSU graduate working with the Soil Conservation Service. They were married in September of 1935 in Minden. They drove to their first home in Clinton, crossing the Mississippi River by ferry in Baton Rouge about the time that Gov. Huey P. Long was being assassinated across the river at the State Capitol. After many ventures and many moves, Sam and Juanita ended up in Franklinton in the 1940s. Juanita was very active in Noble Queen Chapter 45 Order of the Eastern Star in Franklinton. In 1976, she was elected as worthy grand matron of the Order of the Eastern Star for the entire state of Louisiana. Shortly after that, she served as state treasurer of the organization until 1992. For 10 years between 1965 and 1975, she had a business in Franklinton called Juanita's Gifts and Fabrics.
She also worked about 20 years at a local jewelry establishment. She was a faithful member of Franklinton's First Baptist Church. During their marriage, Sam and Juanita were blessed by the birth of three sons: Phillip Harrell Smith, Kenneth Wayne Smith and James Qua Smith. Juanita was preceded in death by her parents, Grover and Mattie Lytle; her brother, James Chester Lytle, who was of Shreveport; and by her husband, Sam, after 58 years of marriage. Juanita is survived by her three sons and their wives: Phillip and Sylvia Smith, Wayne and Amy Jo Smith and Qua and Judy Smith, all of Franklinton; three grandsons and two granddaughters and their spouses: Jim Smith, Mark and Diana Smith, Matt and Monica Smith and Shannon Holliday, all of Franklinton, and Shanda and Byron Addison of Loranger. Great-grandchildren include Tera Smith of Magnolia, Miss., Aimee Smith of Foxworth, Miss., Cody and Daniel Addison of Loranger, Jonna Jenkins, Brittany Barber, Marley and Mattie Claire Smith of Franklinton. Visitation at Crain Funeral Home of Franklinton was on Saturday, May 26, from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. Visitation continues at the funeral home on Sunday, May 27, after 12:30 p.m. until chapel service at 2 p.m., conducted by the Rev. Luther Stanford and Dr. Gene Richards. A special Eastern Star service was held at 7 p.m. on Saturday. Interment will follow in the Ellis Cemetery.
