FUSSELL, VARNADO V.

A retired manager for CLECO and a resident of Franklinton, he died at 5:30 a.m. Thursday, May 28, 1998, at his residence. He was 83 and a native of Blond. He formerly served as town councilman and as mayor of Franklinton and also served on the Washington Parish Police Jury.

Visiting at Crain Funeral Home, Franklinton, 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. Friday and after 9 a.m. Saturday. Religious services at the funeral home chapel at 10 a.m. Saturday, conducted by the Rev. Karl Tingle and Dr. Joe Baugh.

Burial in Ellis Cemetery .

Survived by wife of 58 years, Velma Blackwell Fussell, Franklinton; a son and daughter-in-law, Larry V. and Marsha Fussell, Baton Rouge; a daughter, Sharon Dempsey, Mandeville; three grandchildren, Mrs. Brian (Paige) Durnin and Amy Fussell, both of BatonRouge, and Leigh Anne Dempsey, Mandeville; a great-grandchild, Blake Fussell, Baton Rouge; and a sister, Josie O'Keefe, Covington. He was a member of First Baptist Church, Franklinton.

Velma B. Fussell, a native of Franklinton, La. and a recent resident of Mandeville, La., died on Tuesday, February 2, 2010 at Riverside Medical Center in Franklinton.

She is survived by her son Larry Fussell, and his wife Marsha of Greenwell Springs, La., her daughter, Sharon Dempsey of Mandeville, La., her Grandchildren, Paige Fussell, Amy Roberts and husband Paul Roberts, and Leigh Anne Dempsey, her Great-Grandchildren Blake Fussell and Parker Roberts and her Step Great-Grandchildren Kalli Roberts, Anna Roberts and Walton Roberts. She is also survived by her sister, Huldah Murr, and her brother, Jack Blackwell and survived by many wonderful and caring nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Fussell was preceded in death by her husband Varnado Fussell, her parents John and Florence Blackwell, her sister Alma Mizell and her brother, Curt Blackwell.

After her retirement from the Washington Parish Health Unit, Mrs. Fussell became an avid golfer. " Miss Velma" was known around Franklinton for her love of playing golf at the Franklinton Country Club with her lifelong friends.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend the visitation 9:00 till 11:00 AM Friday, February 5, 2010 with funeral services at 11:00 AM at Crain Funeral Home in Franklinton, La.
