December 16, 1949 - November 3, 2018

Funeral services for Robert Bonner "Bobby" Holt, I, age 68 of Lake Providence, Louisiana, will be held at 11 AM on Tuesday, November 6, 2018, at First United Methodist Church in Lake Providence, Louisiana. Reverends Henry and Clelie Stone will officiate. Internment will follow in the Lake Providence City Cemetery. A time of visitation with the family will be held from 5 to 7 PM on Monday, November 5, 2018, at Cox Funeral Home in Lake Providence.

Bobby passed away unexpectedly on Saturday, November 3, 2018, at the Cabin at Relief Trail in Harriet, Arkansas, on a trip he’d taken annually for ten years. He was surrounded by dear friends, his sister-in-law and brother-in-law, and his beloved wife. Bobby was born at the East Carroll Parish Hospital in Lake Providence on December 16, 1949, to Jack and Florence Holt. He graduated from Lake Providence High School in 1967 and from what was then Northeast Louisiana University in Monroe. He married Kathy Thames at the age of nineteen and upon graduation moved home with her to Lake Providence, where they built a home that they would go on to raise their children in and live in until his death. He farmed his family land for forty-five years, serving as President of Holt Land Company and Doefield Plantation, Delta Planting Company and Circle H Farm. He was a lifelong member of Louisiana Cotton and Grain Association, and former owner and board member of Transylvania Gin.

Bobby was a man of many and varied talents. He inherited his love of flying from his parents, skied barefoot on Lake Providence, was the Lake Providence Country Club’s youngest club golf champion at age fifteen, and played the piano all his life. He was a talented actor, as evidenced by his years playing both the hero and the villain—always the star-- in local melodramas. For the past few years he played keyboard for the band Good Enough alongside great friends. He enjoyed hunting with his grandsons and served as President of Vista Point Hunting Club. He loved mowing the grass with his headphones in listening to music.

Bobby Holt was devoted to the Methodist church where his mother played the organ, where he received the Sunday School Attendance Award as a boy, where he was greeter and usher, and where for the past few years he was responsible for changing the weekly message on the church sign, a mission well-suited to his sense of humor and his tender heart. He was devoted to the community of Lake Providence, a fixture of social events and ever present in difficult times. His good deeds were done quietly, with a quiet kindness. He visited the ill, and the bereaved, stepped in when he saw a need, and always followed up weeks and months and years later as a source of comfort and support. His humor and wit will be dearly missed; his ability to work a room unmatched. Bobby Holt was devoted to Briarfield Academy. He coached basketball there for over twenty years and demonstrated determination, poise and a little fire on the sidelines. His players respected and loved him and continued to be touched into adulthood by the lessons he imparted. He served as a member of the school's Board of Directors from 1981-1991, and attended every sporting event he could, supporting and cheering on his children, nieces and nephews, and his grandchildren. Above all, Bobby Holt was devoted to his family. Their interests were his and their well-being his utmost concern. He enjoyed coaching them on and off the court, celebrating their wins, consoling them in their losses, forever their biggest fan. He taught them loyalty and grace, kindness and humility, generosity, and he taught them how to love.

He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Kathy Thames Holt; daughter and son-in-law Kathleen Holt Martin and Neil Martin; son Robert B. “Bo” Holt, II; son and daughter-in-law Timothy Kiley Holt and Sarah Fortenberry Holt; grandson Holt Daniel Martin; granddaughter Anna Caroline Martin; grandson Jack Quitman Martin; grandson Robert B. “Max” Holt, III; granddaughter Scarlett Mae Holt; grandson Patrick Miller Holt; grandson Davis Thames Holt; grandson Clint Lewis Holt-- all of Lake Providence; and sister Evelyn Claire Holt of Baton Rouge, Louisiana. He is preceded in death by his parents Jack Lewis Holt and Florence Louise Holt; his brother John Lewis Holt; his brother James Westbrook Holt; and his brother William Travis Holt. Pallbearers are: Ricky Condrey, Randy Dukes, Tom Gattle, Toney Lensing, Mike McKenzie, Teddy Schneider, and Tommy Scroggins. Honorary Pallbearers are: Tom Bryant, Wayne Cunningham, David Fortenberry, Freddy Fortenberry, John Gates, Billy Gipson, and Donnie Meadows. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Briarfield Academy, 301 Riddle Lane, Lake Providence, Louisiana.
