Overton Family Cemetery
Webster County,
Louisiana

Overton Cemetery is located on a hill that once overlooked the lowlands of Cooley Creek and Dorcheat Bayou. The view is no longer due to the unchecked growth of the woodlands. The cemetery is approximately two miles southwest of present-day Minden. In 1836, Overton was a thriving port and parish seat for Claiborne Parish. The town of Overton was named in honor of Judge John Holmes Overton, the presiding judge at that time. In or about 1846, Overton was abandoned as the parish seat. Local folk lore is that Overton was moved due to an outbreak of yellow fever. The hilltop cemetery is all that remains of Overton.
