September 11, 1946 - October 21, 2015

A grief-stricken and stunned family is mourning the loss of one of its most radiant members. Robert Nathan “Bob” Schendle died unexpectedly on October 21, 2015. A fun-loving and devoted family man, faithful and hilarious, he was one-of-a-kind and simply irreplaceable.

Bobby, as he was known to his family, was born September 11, 1946, to Joseph Morris and Miriam Seligman Schendle in Bastrop, LA. He graduated from Bastrop High School in 1964, attended Louisiana State University, and received his business degree from Northeast Louisiana University (ULM) in 1969. That same year, on Halloween night, he married the love of his life Kathy, whom he worshiped and adored.

Early on, Bob and Kax lived in Lombard, IL, outside Chicago, where Bob worked for Olinkraft Inc. It was there, in 1974, their beloved daughter Maggi was born. In 1975, Bob and Kathy returned to Monroe where they made their permanent home. In 1977, they were blessed with a son, Robert. In 1979, Bob joined a small group of friends and colleagues to found Sunbelt Plastics, where he served as Vice-President until his retirement in 2003.

Bob enjoyed countless friends and a large extended family who admired his sweet and easy-going disposition. Always apolitical and wonderfully charming, he found common ground with people from all walks of life. He felt just at home at a Broadway show as he did at tailgate parties. He had no detractors and knew no enemies. He inherited his love of LSU football from his father and never gave up on the Saints (though a paper bag was always within reach). He relished old movies, told corny jokes, and watched Jeopardy with whomever wanted some friendly competition.

A true gentleman, he was a great listener and always gave his undivided attention. But when he heard the opening riff to “The Sultans of Swing,” he’d interrupt to tell you it was his favorite song. He loved Dean Martin, Johnny’s Pizza (when they “cooked it right”), giving boat rides on Phillips Lake, and writing checks to Auburn and Tulane. But everything came second to Kax, his children, his adoring grandchildren, his late dog Rexi, and his current dog Louix.

Preceding him in death were his doting parents, and his in-laws, Lillian and Harry Addison.

He is survived by his wife Kathy; children, Margaret Schendle (Joe) Derry and Robert Fenner (Kiley) Schendle; grandchildren Robert Fenner Derry and Georgia Blanche Derry; beloved aunt Phyllis Rose “Phrosie” Raphael, to whom he was especially devoted; siblings Jim (Carolyn) Schendle, H.I. (Susan) Schendle, and Janet (Jay) Finegold, all of Dallas; sister-in-law Judy (Richard) Moore; brother-in-law Mark (Angela) Addison; first cousins (“The Bastrop 10”) and David Cohn; several nieces and nephews, and their husbands, wives, and children.

Visitation will be held on Monday, October 26, 2015, from 1:00 – 3:00 PM at Kilpatrick Funeral Home, 1200 Lamy Lane, Monroe, followed immediately by a service. Entombment will take place at approximately 4:15 PM at Kilpatrick’s Serenity Gardens Mausoleum, 8729 Cypress Street, West Monroe, LA. Rabbi Jana De Benedetti will officiate.

Pallbearers are Fenner Derry, Richard Moore, Addison Moore, Taylor Moore, Mark Addison, and Joe Derry.

Honorary pallbearers are Clyde Webb, John Jackson, Hilton Russell, Morris Funderburg, Dr. David Hebert, Steve Mintz, Judge Milton Moore, Morris Mintz, Brian Caldwell and Ron Robertson.

The light of our lives may have been extinguished but his memory will endure forever. RIP Bobby. We will laugh again, but it will never be quite the same without you.
