He enlisted on April 15, 1862, in New Orleans, Louisiana. His name appeared on a Roll of Prisoners of War after he was captured at Port Hudson, Louisiana, on July 9, 1863. He was paroled at Port Hudson on July 12, 1863. Companies initially part of Miles' Legion was placed into service under the 10th Battalion Louisiana Cavalry. The 10th Battalion was later redesignated as the 18th Battalion.
The Battalion mustered into service on January 25, 1864, and mustered out of service May 4, 1865, after surrendering in New Orleans, Louisiana.
