He enlisted April 19, 1862, in Columbia, Louisiana as the 2nd Sergeant and was mustered in on the same date in Monroe, Louisiana. His name appeared on a Roll of Prisoners of War after Confederate forces capitulated at Vicksburg, Mississippi on July 3, 1863. He was paroled at Vicksburg on July 9, 1863. His name appeared on a list of Officers & Men of the 31st Regiment Louisiana Infantry who reported in camp for exchange at Vienna, Louisiana on March 29, 1864. His name also appeared on a Roll of Prisoners of War after Confederate forces surrendered in New Orleans, Louisiana on May 26, 1865. He was paroled in Monroe, Louisiana on June 13, 1865.
