From Louisiana Archives - Durnan, John (also Durnin, John, Downing, John), Private in Captain Holmes' Battery, Louisiana Light Artillery. Federal Rolls of Prisoners of War show him captured at Woodville, Mississippi, October 6, 1864. Received. at Camp Douglas, Illinois, November 3, 1864, from Vicksburg, Mississippi, through Cario, Illinois. Released on Oath of Allegiance to United States, June 17, 1865. Residence St. Helena Parish, Louisiana, complexion fair, hair light, eyes blue, height 5 feet, 9 inches.
