HAUGHTON, Louisiana - Funeral services for Alvis Ray Nicklas will be held at Union Grove Baptist Church in Lillie, Louisiana, Tuesday, August 17, 2010 at 2:00 pm, with his nephew, Rev Ronnie Lowery officiating. Interment will follow in Union Grove Cemetery. Visitation will be 5:00 pm until 7:00 pm Monday, August 16, 2010 at Hill Crest Funeral Home in Haughton. Alvis was born March 28, 1938, in O'Brien, Texas and moved to Lillieat the age of five where he grew up hunting and fishing with his Uncle Minor Nicklas in the Little Corney Bottom. He entered into rest August 13, 2010, in Shreveport, Louisiana after a lengthy illness. He was retired from Lucent Technologies, Inc after forty-two years of service. He was preceded in death by parents, Joseph Wilson Nicklas and Irene Shannon Nicklas, sisters Vivian Farrar, Nadine Summerfield and brother Melvin Nicklas. Survivors include his loving wife of forty-six years Joyce Hall Nicklas, daughter Laura Nicklas and son Joseph Nicklas both of Shreveport, sister Linda Thompson and husband H W Thompson of Junction City, Louisiana; sisters-in-law Barbara Lowery of Crossett, Arkansas and Linda Jones and husband Don Jones of Indian Harbour Beach, FL; numerous nephews and nieces, and a dear family friend, Shirley Winderweedle of Waskom, Texas. In the words of Aldo Leopold "there are some who can live without wild things and some who cannot." Alvis was one who could not. He loved nature, wildlife and the outdoors. He was the happiest when he was in his garden. He was an avid fan of the New Orleans Saints and of all LSU athletics. He was a diligent worker both at his job and at home. He was a loving husband, father, son, brother, uncle, and friend. He will be greatly missed. Pallbearers will be Tim Roope, Walt Thompson, Rod Brantley, Jared Brantley, Gene Barron, and Bruce Barron. The family extends heartfelt gratitude to Dr Bob Massingil, Cheryl and Diantha for their care and concern. Your kindness will always be remembered. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to the Union Grove Cemetery Fund, P O Box 23, Lillie, Louisiana; 71256."Rest is thine, sweet memory ours Good night, dear daddy, good night!
