Daughter of Thomas McCauley and Alma "Allie" Magee Babington
A Young Girl's Sad Fate
Franklinton, June 3, 1900. A feeling of gloom and sadness prevails over this unusually happy village on this beautiful Sabbath morning. Miss Victoria, the loving young daughter of T. M. Babington, lies cold in death, having been drowned yesterday morning. She with quite a number of young friends left town for the purpose of spending the day in the woods merry making. They traveled in a light spring wagon. The recent heavy rains had caused a washout in the road, the walls of the hole were perpendicular and some ten or twelve feet deep. The wagon was driven into it and the entire party thrown into the water. All fortunately escaped except Miss Babington. Loving friends used every effort to resuscitate her, but to no avail. Miss Victoria was fourteen years old, a most beautiful young girl just budding into womanhood. Her disposition was as lovable as her person, and young as well as old were devotedly attached to her. The funeral services were held this evening at 2 o'clock, at the M. E. Church, by Rev. J. S. Henderson, after which the remains were interred in the Ellis Graveyard.
