He enlisted March 4, 1862, in Claiborne Parish, Louisiana. He was promoted from Corporal to 1st Sergeant October 31, 1862. He remained present for duty throughout the war. His name appeared on a Roll of Prisoners of War after he was captured near Franklin, Tennessee on December 17, 1864. After his capture he was sent to Military Prison, Louisville, Kentucky arriving on December 20, 1864. He was forwarded to Camp Douglas, Chicago, Illinois the same date arriving there on December 22, 1864. He was discharged from Camp Douglas on June 20, 1865.
