Born 1840 in Georgia. He lost a leg in the battle of Seccessionville, SC in June of 1862 and died at Charleston, SC. Brother of A W Upshaw and W Elisha Upshaw
From Louisiana Archives ~ Upshaw, J W, Private Company D, 4th Battalion Louuisiana Infantry. Enlisted Carroll Parish, Louisiana, August 9, 186-. Present on all Rolls to April, 1862. Roll May & June, 1862, Absent, wounded in battle June 18, -; in Hospital, Charleston.
