STAFF SERGEANT US Army Air Corps
360 Bombardment Squadron Heavy
World War II
November 6, 1914 - January 23, 1943
Killed in Action
Purple Heart
He is buried in a mass grave (Section D, Site 306B) at Rock Island National Cemetery, Rock Island, Rock Island County, Illinois.
He enlisted September 17, 1941, at Camp Shelby, Mississippi. US Army Service #34150810. He was the right waist aerial gunner on a B-17F aircraft, Tail #41-24567, nicknamed "Beats Me" - the aircraft was one of many on a bombing raid of submarine docks and harbors at Lorient, France. During the bombing run, a bomb from an aircraft above struck the B-17 and flipped it over. Despite the tail section missing from the aircraft, the pilot righted the aircraft at which time the enemy fighters initiated their attack. During the attack, the pilot, co-pilot and gunners were killed. The aircraft crashed in a forest near Pluvigner, France.
