Michael is not a veteran of the US, but he was a soldier for Pope Pius IX, and guarded the Papal States in Italy. He was captured and only freed after much wrangling by French & Italian efforts. His native Ireland & the U K abandoned any efforts to have him freed. After his service to the Pope, he came to the US and entered the seminary in New Iberia. He eventually found his way to the New Orleans, Louisiana area. You can read more about his life at his memorial on FAG.)
