102-Year-Old Man Dies Near Leesville
Leesville, La., March 19 - W. R. "Uncle Bill" Turner, age 102 years, Vernon Parish's oldest citizen, died at his home, ten miles north of Leesville, Tuesday after a short illness.
"Uncle Bill" was the last of the Confederate veterans living in Vernon Parish. He was born in Holmes County, Florida, in 1845. He came to Vernon Parish with his parents in 1855 when the family located near the head of Castor creek. At the outbreak of the Civil war "Uncle Bill" enlisted in the Confederate Army and served throughout the conflict.
After returning from the war he married and homesteaded 160 acres of land on which homestead he lived until his death.
Strictly a pioneer, "Uncle Bill" was the grand old man of Vernon Parish; the strong type of man that it took to survive in an unsettled country and to help build up a community.
He had many friends and always enjoyed a friend's visit to his home.
Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. R.B. McInnis, Anacoco and Mrs. Mat West, Route 4, Leesville.
