He enlisted on February 28, 1862 at Montgomery, Alabama. His name appeared on Roll of Prisoners of War captured at Vicksburg, Mississippi on July 4, 1863, and paroled on July 10, 1863. His name later appeared on Roll of Prisoners of War captured near Jonesboro, Georgia on September 1, 1864. He was exchanged on September 19 & 22, 1864 at Rough And Ready, Georgia. His name once again appeared on a list of Prisoners of War after his capture on December 16, 1864 near Nashville, Tennessee. On January 4, 1865, he was housed at Louisville, Kentucky and on January 6, 1865 he arrived at Camp Chase, Ohio. On May 15, 1865, while at Camp Chase, Ohio he completed the Oath of Allegiance to the United States.
