BOGALUSA n Helen Nathalie Levy, 85, a resident of Bogalusa died Saturday in the LSU Medical Center in Bogalusa. She was an active member of Annunciation Catholic Church and was a member of the Altar Society and Kaycettes.
A former member of the Annunciation Parish Council, Annunciation School Board and Confraternity of Christian Doctrine teacher, she served as facilitator of Scripture Study and Catechetical instructor for Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults, Minister of Holy Communion and Oblate of St. Benedict. She received the Order of St. Louis medal for service to Annunciation Catholic Church.
A graduate of Bogalusa High School with a bachelor of arts degree from Southeastern University, she received her master of education from LSU and did advance graduate work at the University of Colorado, Boulder, CO and the University of California, Berkley, CA.
She retired from the Bogalusa School System where she taught biology and science at Bogalusa High School and was assistant principal of Bogalusa High School and supervisor of Secondary Education and Transportation of Bogalusa City Schools. She was the first woman supervisor of transportation in the State of Louisiana. A member of Delta Kappa Gamma Society International, she served as treasurer, president, and district director and on several state committees and was a member of the Retired Teachers Association and former member of the Alphega Literary Society.
Active in community service, she was student advisor of the Junior American Red Cross, Community Chest Board member and American Cancer Society board member. She was an example of Christian faith and love, to all who knew her, especially to all the students who came under her guidance and car, family members said, adding, she was a loving sister, aunt, and friend and will be greatly missed.
Survivors include two sisters, Thelma Julia Levy and Mary Louise Levy, both of Bogalusa; a brother, Henry Nathan Levy Jr. and his wife Patricia of Murphy, CN; numerous nieces and nephews to the fourth generation; and care givers, Helen Yochim, Janice Bidwell, Betty
McClendon, Katherine Delaune, Staci Williams, and Maria Magee.
Preceding her in death were her parents, Henry Nathan Levy Sr. and Mary Louise "Mamie" Levy; and two sisters, Lois Levy Daniel and Vera Levy Horton.
Visitation will be held today at Poole-Ritchie Funeral Home from 5-9 p.m. with a Rosary service at 6 p.m.
Visitation will continue tomorrow at Annunciation Catholic Church from 9 a.m. until time of the funeral service, at 11 a.m. Father Lawrence Phelps will officiate at the service.
Interment will follow in Ponemah Cemetery.
