MER ROUGE MAN, 66, SEES SISTER FIRST TIME IN THIRTY YEARS
By Mrs. J B Hornbeck
Folks read human interest stories in newspapers and magazines but little realize the same kind of stories are taking places in their own small communities.
W A Corley (could this possibly be A B Corley?) who lives in Mer Rouge, and will be 66 years old in August, has just seen his sister, Miss Edna Corley, for the first time in 30 years. She will soon be 70.
This story goes back a number of years, when Mr. Corley lost his mother when he was 8 years old. The family was living near Macon, Mississippi, at the time and he and Edna were taken into separate home to be reared. Their father was living but there is no recollection of him during that time.
The family moved and the two children lost trace of each other until Mr. Corley was about 20 years of age, when through mutual friends, he found his sister while working in a saw mill town. Then later they saw their father and the sister decided to go with her father.
A few letters were exchanged, then Mr. Corley married and came to Louisiana and as he expressed it, they had all been separated so much, there was little feeling of family ties; letters stopped and again they drifted apart.
A short time ago, Mr. Corley received a letter from an Alabama cousin asking if he were W A Corley (A B ?), and to get in touch with a hospital in Meridian, Mississippi, where his father was critically ill and calling for him. The letter had been a long time in reaching Mr. Corley, he found that his father had died, but a complete record had been left by the family doctor.
And there in the hospital, Mr. Corley found his 70 year old sister, Edna. She had remained with her father until his death. then having no home of her town, paid for her room and board by helping in different ways.
Mr. Corley brought her home with him, and as one of the grandchildren expressed it, "Aunt Edna is so happy she keeps touching us and saying, 'I just can't believe I have a real family for the first time in my life.'"
