Warren Easton served as Louisiana Superintendent of Education from 1884 to 1888 and established the State Normal School in Natchitoches, now known as Northwestern State University.

He was elected Superintendent of New Orleans Public Schools in 1888 and launched classes in calisthenics, drawing, music, shorthand and typing. He inaugurated fire drills in schools and required compulsory smallpox vaccinations of students.

Easton also established the Teachers' Pension League and organized the Louisiana Teachers' Association where he served as President.

Louisiana's oldest public high school, Warren Easton Charter High School at 3019 Canal Street, New Orleans, is named in his honor.
