He enlisted on September 30, 1861, at Camp Moore, Louisiana. In December 1861, through July 1862, he was detailed as a cook for the officers. He re-enlisted on May 23, 1862, at Edwards Depot, Mississippi. His name appeared on a Roll of Prisoners Of War after Confederate forces at Vicksburg, Mississippi capitulated. He was paroled at Vicksburg on July 10, 1863.
