He enlisted as a Private on September 21, 1861 at Columbus, Kentucky. On March 1, 1864, he was detailed as a drummer by verbal order of Lt Colonel Nelson. On May 10, 1864, Lt Colonel Nelson sent him to the rear as a cook. His name appeared on record as a Prisoner of War paroled on May 22, 1865, at Montgomery, Alabama. (Note: Where or when he obtained the title "Captain" was not readily available.)
