He enlisted November 29, 1862 in Captain Helvenstein's Company 23rd Battalion Georgia Dragoons). On May 26, 1864, he was captured at Burnt Hickory, Georgia (near Atoona, Georgia). On June 2, 1864, he was sent to Louisville, Kentucky as a Prisoner of War. He arrived on June 3, 1864. On June 6, 1864, he was moved from Louisville, Kentucky to Rock Island Barracks, Rock Island, Illinois. His name appeared on a list as having volunteered on October 31, 1864 to serve on the frontier in the US Army, but the US Army rejected him.
