Marshall Oscar Calloway was born in Cleburne, TX on October 7, 1923, to Oscar Marion Calloway and Verna Wardlaw Calloway. He passed from this life at age 93 on September 17, 2017. Funeral services will be held at 1 PM on Saturday, September 23, 2017 at Pine Street Church of Christ in Vivian, LA, officiated by Bro. Dale Alexander. Burial will follow at Vivian Cemetery in Vivian, LA. He was preceded in death by his parents, his brother Marion Calloway, and his sister Crystal Calloway Cowart. He is survived by his beloved wife of 65 years, Elizabeth McKeever Calloway; three sons, Terry Calloway and wife Nancy, Randy Calloway and wife Jonizo, and Brian Calloway and wife Tina; three grandsons, Alexander Calloway and wife Liz, Austin Calloway, and Matthew Calloway; four granddaughters, Katherine Sueda and husband Shin, Carrie Calloway, Allison Calloway, and Courtney Calloway; one great-grandson, Jeffrey Sueda; one sister, Sandra Calloway Bamburg; brothers Don A. Calloway and wife Betty, and Ray Calloway and wife Judy. He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews whom he loved.

Mr. Calloway put on Jesus in baptism in 1946, and attended the Pine Street Church of Christ in Vivian, LA with his wife, Elizabeth, for over 50 years. He was not known to regularly quote scripture, but he was known to regularly live it: James 1:27, Matthew 7:12, Matthew 25:34-36.

Mr. Calloway was raised during the Great Depression and very early learned the value of hard work. He left high school early to assist his parents in providing for their family. These experiences helped instill in him a tremendous work ethic and empathy for those in need. He and Elizabeth gave generously to family, friends, and those in need their entire married lives.

Mr. Calloway volunteered for the United States Marine Corps in September 1941 and completed USMC Boot Camp prior to the attack on Pearl Harbor. He was a decorated WWII combat veteran with the 4th Marine Division, reaching the rank of Sergeant. He saw combat in four different invasions in the Central Pacific, making four D-Day landings under hostile fire and continuing in combat until each island was secure. His landings included: Roi-Namur of the Kwajalein Atoll in the Marshall Islands, both Saipan and Tinian in the Marianas Islands, and Iwo Jima in the Volcano Islands. His Unit was preparing for the invasion of Japan when the war ended.

After the war, Mr. Calloway found employment in the telephone industry and remained in that industry until he retired in 1989. On July 3, 1952, he married Elizabeth McKeever in Vivian, LA, and remained devoted to her and to their family for the rest of his life. Together they raised three sons and welcomed daughters-in-law, then grandchildren, and a great-grandson into their family. Their home was always open and welcoming to friends and visitors at any time, for any reason. Mr. Calloway’s up-beat spirit, warm greeting, and genuine joy in talking with others will be missed.

A very special thank you is owed to Mr. Calloway’s nephew Kevin Cowart and his wife Dianne. Kevin and Dianne provided constant love and support to Mr. Calloway as he journeyed through the final years of his life. They made his life both better and longer. He loved them both dearly, came to depend on them, and thought of them as son and daughter.

Mr. Calloway’s Pallbearers will be Kevin Cowart (Honorary), Alexander Calloway, Austin Calloway, Matthew Calloway, Richard Wilson, Duane Cowart and Clay Cowart.
