SHREVEPORT, LA- A celebration of life for Charles Edward "Coach" Dickens, 85, will be held at 12 Noon Friday, June 6, 2014 at Rose-Neath's Southside Chapel. Officiating will be Bro. John Harp and Bro. Gary Melancon. Interment will follow in Forest Park on St. Vincent Ave. Visitation with the family will be from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. Thursday, June 5, 2014 at the funeral home.Coach was born in Rayville and raised in Homer, LA on February 17, 1929 to B.A. and Lucy Dickens. He passed away on June 2, 2014 in Shreveport. He was a resident of Shreveport and a member of Brookwood Baptist Church. He was a 1953 graduate of LA Tech then a coach for 33 years with the Caddo Parish Schools coaching basketball, football and track at Midway, Lakeshore, Linear and Northwood schools. He never forgot a face or name of his students. He earned the respect from his students for his firm, but caring spirit, even those he corrected with his paddle. He, "Top Cat," enjoyed fishing on Lake Bisteanau at the family camp when not coaching. He was proud to serve his country in the U.S. Army. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Martha Ann Dickens and his parents. Left to cherish his memory are his daughter, Ann Dickens Holtzclaw; grandchildren, Tiffany Martin and husband, Jason, Jason Holtzclaw and wife, Carson; great-grandchildren, Addison and Ashton Martin, Beaux and Kallyn Holtzclaw; sister, Elbie Dickens; and special family friend, Nancy Young.Honoring Coach as pallbearers will be Jason Martin, Steve Brown, Jason Holtzclaw, Chuck Sistrunk, Bill Boyd, Jerry Burton and Joe Bates. Honorary pallbearers are Jimmy Bates, and Kenny Simpson. "For when the one great scorer comes to write against your name. He writes- not that you won or lost- but how you played the game."
